New Year's Eve Checklist:
Well, I don't actually have a New Year's Eve Checklist. Due to a deathly fear of driving anywhere on this most partying of nights, we'll hang out quietly at home until about 11 or so, and then hoof it across the street to ring in the New Year with our neighbors who throw a party every year. Then we'll hang outside and watch them and other neighbors set off fireworks and hopefully not set the street on fire. I remember one year an ember settled at the base of a tree. No one noticed for a good long time, until the thing suddenly just burst into flame. IT WAS A GOOD THING WE WERE STILL ALL OUTSIDE, OR....EEK!! Who knows disaster might have befallen us. As it was, I think we turned a hose on the blaze and put it out without any further ado. Phew! So the moral of that story is "DRINKING AND FIREWORKS DON'T MIX!!!"
Of course, we do have a post New Year's Day checklist:
1) taking down all Christmas decorations and packing them away (this could take us days)
2) gathering up all the Christmas presents that are still out in the living room and putting them away (again, could take days. Not that there's so much lying around, but finding the storage space for any new things is a challenge for us every year.)
3) Cleaning the house after all misc. items have been cleared out and put away. Now, this is actually where the fun comes in. My parents, bless their hearts, gave us an iRobot Roomba for Christmas. Yayyy!!! You just push a button and the little guy starts roaming the house. After an hour or so you push the button again and declare, "I've vacuumed!" Can't beat that.
4) prepare for the resumption of school after a two week break. That means laundry and shopping for lunch food, but it also means saying goodbye to my older one who will head back up to college.
Not that I'm in any way sad that she goes to college, mind you!
5) Here I was going to say "seriously get back into writing," but I've been writing all along, except for a couple of days here and there. If you don't make that schlep to the computer every day, those books just don't get written. But I'll be glad for the lack of distractions as life gets back to normal.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
And remember, don't set any trees on fire!
